    In his will, John gave his "negro man Boston" his freedom after John's decease. It should be noted that Boston was freed by the State before the will could do so. Boston took the name Prince Royal and remained with Lt. John for the rest of John's life. On 3 July 1782, John and his wife, Thankful, for affection and good will which he bore towards him, as his former servant and in consideration of his dutiful and good behavior, gave him four acres near his own. Prince being a prudent man, accumulated more property and as late as 1806 or 1808 was to be seen riding in his own carriage with his wife.
