     Alvin Ray Oakes was born on 17 January 1893 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4 He was the son of James Bruce Oakes and Rachel Anne Beard. Alvin, age 7, appeared on the US Census of 1900 living at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, James Bruce and Rachel Anne Oakes.2 Alvin, age 17, appeared on the US Census of 1910 living at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, James Bruce and Rachel Anne Oakes.5 Alvin, age 26 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 on Mill Road, Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.6 According to the Federal Census in 1920, Alvin was a farmer.6

Alvin Ray Oakes, age 29, married Ruth E. Shoemaker, daughter of Horatio Seymour Shoemaker and Elizabeth Alice Wertman, on 4 March 1922.

The Parsonage of the Lutheran church was the scene of a pretty wedding ceremony on Saturday evening at 5:30 o'clock, the high contracting parties being Alvin B. Oakes, of Watsontown, Pa.. and Miss Ruth E. Shoemaker, of Bloomsburg, Pa. The ceremony was performed by Dr. M. Stanley Kemp. pastor of the church. The groom is a brother of John W. Oakes, of Allegheny street, and is a prosperous young farmer. The full ring ceremony was used, and after the ceremony a wedding fest was served at the home of the groom's brother, John W Oakes. After spending a short viewing the fine scenery of this section, the newlyweds departed for a wedding trip to eastern cities. They will take up their residence on the groom's farm near Watsontown.

Alvin, age 36 years, and Ruth Oakes appeared on the US Census of 1930 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.9 According to the Federal Census in 1930, Alvin was a rural route mail carrier.9 Alvin, age 46 years, and Ruth Oakes appeared on the US Census of 1940 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.10 According to the Federal Census in 1940, Alvin was a mail carrier.10 On in 1942, Alvin registered for the World War II draft, while living at RD#2, Watsontown, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, giving his age as 49 and his employer as the US. Government.3 Alvin, age 56 years, and Ruth Oakes appeared on the US Census of 1950 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.11 According to the Federal Census in 1950, Alvin was a mail carrier.11 In 1964, the year Alvin died, he lived at Watsontown, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.12 He died on 15 April 1964 at Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church (city), Virginia, at age 71 from an acute myocardial infaction.1,12,13,7,4 Alvin's obituary of 20 April 1964, reads:

Services for Alvin R. Oakes, 71, Watsontown RD 2, retired mail carrier and widely known resident of Delaware Township, who died in Virginia where he was stricken while on a trip, were held Satur-7 day at 2 p.m. at the Paul S. Grittner funeral home at Turbotville.

The services were largely attended by relatives and friends and the floral tributes were many and beautiful. Many friends called Saturday from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home to pay final tribute. Officiating at the servic-2 es were his pastor, Rev. John L. Herbster, of St. John's United Church of Christ at McEwensville, where he had been an active member. Interment was in McEwensville cemetery.

Pallbearers were Postmaster Paul C. Klapp, C. Jay Muffly, Boyd E. Anspach, of Watsontown; Dr. Paul R. Seibert, of Muncy; Clarence Eschbach and William Bower, McEwensville.
