Milford Ray Schaffner Esq. was born on 5 October 1856 at Brady Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3 He was the son of Jacob Schaffner and Maria Metz. Milford, age 22, appeared on the US Census of 1880 living at Brady Township, Huntingdon County,in the household of his widowed mother, Maria Schaffner.4 In 1881, he was admitted to the bar.5
Milford Ray Schaffner Esq., age 28, married Margaret Oakes, age 35 , daughter of James Bruce Oakes and Maria Durham, on 26 May 1885.6,2,5 Milford, age 43 years, and Margaret Oakes, age 49 years, appeared on the US Census of 1900 at McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania.2 According to the Federal Census in 1900, Milford was an attorney.2 Milford, age 53 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 on Second Street, McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, He was a widower, and an attorney.7
Milford married second on 24 June 1914 at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, Annie B. Frey, the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Artz) Frey. She was born about 1866 om Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She died 7 March 1931 om McConnelsburg, Pennsylvania.8,5
Milford, age 63 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 on Second Street, McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, with his second wife, Annie. He was an attorney.9 Milford died on 6 July 1922 at home at McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, at age 65 from angina pectoris.1,3,5 Milford was buried on 9 July 1922 at Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, in Section 8; Plot 92.1,3,5 Milford's obituary of 13 July 1922, reads:
Milton Ray Shaffner, for thirtyeight years a practicing attorney before the courts of Fulton County died at his home in McConnellsburg about' 6 o'clock Thursday morning July 6, 1922, at the age of 65 years, 9 months and 1 day.
Mr Shaffner was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Shaffner, deceased, and was born in Big Valley, Huntingdon County. He read law in the office of J. M. Bailey in Huntingdon and 1881 was admitted to the bar. Dureyeing the first year of his practice he was retained as counsel in a case which required that he go to England which he did in 1882 and also in 1883.
In 1884 he was united in marriage with Miss Maggie Oaks and in that year Mr. and Mrs. Shaffner took up their residence in McConnellsburg where Mr. Shaffner opened an office for the practice of law, writing insurance and specially interesting himself in the securing of pensions Tor veterans of the Civil War and widows of the veterans of that war, " in the discharge of which duty he was very successful. Through close application to business and because of a natural faculty for the acquisition of money he became quite wealthy.
In 1903 Mrs. Shaffner died and in 1914 he was again united in marriage, this time Miss Annie B. Frey of McConnellsburg being his bride, who survives, together with one sister and two brothers--J. M. Shaffner of Hammontown, Pa., Mrs. Harriet Rakerd of Norristown, Pa., and Mrs. Anna Logan of Huntingdon, Pa. No children were born to either union
Mr. Shaffner was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and for a number of years was very active in Sunday School work having served as president of the Fulton County Sunday School Association for a number of terms. In the home he was kind and considerate, in social intercourse with his fellow men he was courteous and affable, and took a philosophical view of life and its duties.
Mr. Shaffner was a 32 degree Mason, being a member of A. F. and A. M. of Huntingdon, Huntingdon Commandery No. 65 Knights Templar, Harrisburg Consistory A. A. S. R. of Harrisburg and Zembo Temple A. A. O. N. M. S. The funeral obsequies were conducted by the Masonic fraternity at 2 p. m. Sunday, the 9th inst. the remains being placed in the Shaffner vault in the Huntingdon Cemetery. A brief service was held in the home prior to starting to the place of interment, conducted by Rev. William J. Lowe.
