Compeller's Notes:
From Stott (2015) "The evidence that brothers William and John Elwyn of Heigham and Richard Elwyn of North Walsham are grandsons of Peter Elwyn of Wooddalling is inconclusive at best. If they are Peter’s grandchildren, these brothers and their sister, Mrs. Goodins, are completely ignored in the will of their supposed uncle, Rev. John Elwyn of Norwich (son of Peter Elwyn of Wooddalling), who mentions a large number of his nieces and nephews. Secondly, Peter Elwyn’s will is ambiguous. It is unclear whether it mentions two grandson’s named William Elwyn or just one. If the will does refer to William Elwyn of Heigham, it ignores his brothers John and Richard and their unnamed sister. The siblings of William Elwyn, therefore, are ignored in the wills of their grandfather and uncle, if Moriarty’s theory is accurate. The Barker connection is also tenuous. The names of the Barker relatives in the two branches of the family are only a minimal match, easily within the realm of coincidence.

The fact that both Elwyn families have Barker kin is interesting, but the evidence does not yet support a solid connection between the Elwyns of Heigham and the Elwyns of Wooddalling. Nor do these two Elwyn families appear to be of similar social standing. William and John Elwyn of Heigham were tanners; their brother Richard Elwyn of North Walsham was a cordwainer. William Barker of Heigham was also a tanner. Peter Elwyn of Wooddalling, the alleged grandfather of the Heigham and North Walsham Elwyns held lands in several parishes. His descendants living in Thurning were termed gentlemen and held considerable land.1
