"And the said Thomas Brodirton, Erle of Norfolke, cam dawn into Norfolke and ther he wedded a knyght's daughter fast by Bungey." So writes 19th-century Norfolk historian Francis Blomefield (1808), quoting an ancient manuscript from the Book of Pleas.
Alice Hales brought nothing to her marriage save her beauty. She was not the heiress of the Hales manors, as she had a brother, and the Hales family would have supported of the young earl of Norfolk whether or not he married Alice, since he was their feudal overlord. On Thomas's end, there was no political or territorial advantage to the marriage - it was a love match, pure and simple. | Family: Thomas of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, Marshall of England / Alice de Hales (F2186)

"It is odd that Elizabeth arranged the marriage of her younger surviving daughter, who was only in her fourth year, before that of her elder. But along with the earl and countess of Hereford, Margaret of France, the widowed queen of Edward I, was also a party to the contract on young Margaret de Bohun’s behalf. The queen, who remained very close to her stepdaughter the countess of Hereford, was no doubt godmother to this Margaret, which may have been a factor in why she was chosen over her elder sister for the Courtenay marriage." | Family: Sir Hugh de Courtenay, KG, Earl of Devon / Margaret de Bohun, Countess of Devon (F2272)

37 |
Birth: According to the 1881 Canadian Census she was born in 1865, however, the 1900 US Census states she was born in November 1900. Was she shaving years off her age? | Whelpley, Edith M. "Ellie" (I11310)
|
38 |
Birth: Both 1897 and 1899 are given for his birth year. On his two draft registrations, which he filled out, he gives 1897. I have used 1897 as his birth year. | Roy, Elmer Francis (I11169)
|
39 |
Birth: If he was born in 1580, he would have been 13 years old when he married. I suspect the birth date is incorrect. | Wakeley, Richard (I25643)
|
40 |
Birth: Most sources state he was born in 1850, but a few put it as 1849. | Buck, Lionel Hartley (I25708)

Compilers Note: On two censuses he is found as a lodger and listed as married. My conjecture is that he returned to Canada, married, and worked in the US while supporting his family in Québec. I have no proof. | Roy, Raymond Anthony (I11168)
|
50 |
Connection: The PRDH does not list Jean-Charles. | LeRoy, Jean-Charles (I13040)
|
51 |
Death: His death is listed as 1767 in Kingston, New Brunswick in Geneanet and Ancestry Family Trees. This would have placed his death before the Revolutionary War, clearly an error. | Whelpley, Oliver (I13652)
|
52 |
Death: The coroner's report states he died on 31 August. | Smith, Richard Harry "Ricky" (I25485)
|
53 |
Immigraton: The 1900 Census lists his immigration year as 1888, while the 1930 gives 1875. Given that his naturalization was 1887, the latter is probably more correct. | Roy, Joseph (I8)

Marriage: Sarah was not the widow of John Whitlock as both Josephine Frost and Donald Lines Jacobus have asserted. | Howes, Sarah (I13671)
|
57 |
Name: He is called Nathaniel is some of the records. | Whelpley, Nathan (I13673)
|
58 |
Name: It appears that she mainly used "Désirée" as her name. | Roy, Adèle-Clémence-Désirée "Désirée" (I25616)
|
59 |
Parents: Several Ancestor.com family trees have her last name as "Darling" and her parents as Denis and Hannah (Francis) Darling. One has her as being adopted by John Darling with a birth surname as "Barney". I can find no proof of any of this, and every source I check gives her maiden name as unknown. | Sarah (I13662)
|
60 |
Second Marriage and Death: Much more research needs to be done on this family. Compounding the issues is the name Joseph. In Québec, if a boy's first name was not Joseph, then he was christened Joseph. Roy is also a very common name. Hence Joseph Roy is akin to John Smith. In Ancestry.com Member Trees is a second marriage to a Mary Parker, and a death date of 13 July 1908. I found the Find-a-Grave record for the Joseph Roy who died on 13 July 1908, and it states his father was Augustine. Clearly a different Joseph. Also, in the 1880 Census, our Joseph was married to Ada. Adelaide easily becomes Ada, while Mary does not. | Roy, Joseph (I847)
|
61 |
Ages: Maud was a minor and it is unlikely that the marriage was ever consummated. | Family: Bertram III de Verdun, Sheriff of Leicestershire / Maud de Ferrers (F8257)
|
62 |
Ancestry: Ames (1938) states the following: Note: In Mitchell’s ‘History of Bridgewater’ (1840), which contained the first American account of the family, this John Ames of Bruton is called Richard— an error copied in several subsequent records.
The descent is given as:
(1) JOHN AMES. All that is known of this earliest ancestor from whom the Ames family of Easton can trace direct descent is that he was buried in Bruton, Somersetshire, England, Feb. 21, 1560, and that he had at least one son.
Issue
i. John Ames (see 2).
(2) JOHN AMES, son of John Ames (i). Born, Bruton, England; died there in 1583. Married, Sept. 25, 1559, Margery Crome (or Brome).
Issue (All born in Bruton, England)
i. John Ames (see 3).
ii. Launcelot Ames, born about 1562.
iii. William Ames, born about 1564.
(3) JOHN AMES, eldest son of John Ames (2). Christened, Bruton, England, May i, 1560; died there in 1629.
sue (All born in Bruton, England)
1
i. Thomas Ames, died in infancy.
ii. Henry Ames, christened July 25, 1603.
iii. William Ames (see 4).
iv. John Ames (see 4A).
V. Mary Ames, christened Apr. 1, 1613.
Richard Ames has different dates than this John Ames. More research is needed. I have followed the line given by Ames, Richard (1959). | Ames, Richard (I38)
