     Esther Agnes Matthews was born on 15 August 1874 at Montpelier, Vermont.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Joseph Matthews and Jane Elisabeth Pareau. Esther Agnes Matthewsappeared on the US Census of 1880 in the household of Joseph Matthews and Eliza Pareau at Montpelier, Vermont.4

Esther Agnes Matthews, age 20, married Horace William Whelpley, age 24 , son of Captain David C. Whelpley and Harriet Jane Pangbourne, on 31 August 1894 at Montpelier, Vermont.5,6

Esther Agnes Matthews married William Orton Gokey, son of Charles Cyrus Gokey and Ellen Eliza Johnson.7,6 Esther Agnes Matthews and William Orton Gokey appeared on the census of 1900 at Boston, Massachusetts; In the 1900 US Census record seems to have been quickly done, and is filled with misinformation including names and dates.7 Esther, age 35 years, and William, age 34 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 at Clearcut Street, Northfield, Vermont.8 Esther, age 45 years, and William, age 44 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 at 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.9 Esther, age 55 years, and William, age 54 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 at 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.10 Esther, age 65 years, and William, age 64 years, appeared on the US Census of 1940 at 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.11 Esther and William lived in 1941 at 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts, In 1941 Esther and William Gokey lived at 37 Joy Steet, Boston, Massachusetts.12 Esther Agnes Matthews died on 1 August 1964 at Barre, Vermont, at age 89 She died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease at the Don Camp Nursing Home in South Barre.1,2,3 Esther's obituary of 3 August 1964, reads:

MRS. ESTHER A. GOKEY MONTPELIER - Mrs. Esther Agnes Gokey, 89, of 2 Barried St., died Saturday night at the Pan Camp Nursing Home in Barre. She had been ill for six months. Bom in Montpelier, Aug. 15, 1874, she was a daughter of Joseph and Eliza (Pratt) Matthews. She spent her childhood here and attended local schools. She. was married to William O. Gokey in Northfield. He died in 1947. Most of their married life was spent in Boston, Mrs. Gokey was a member of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church. She leaves seven grandchildren, 19 great - grandchildren, and two nieces, Mrs. Harry White of Montpelier and Mrs. Elizabeth Silver of Burlington. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Northfield. Friends may call at the Barber 4 Lanier Funeral Home, 139 Main St., Montpelier, Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home Monday evening.2
