James Bruce Oakes Jr. was born on 22 February 1886 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of James Bruce Oakes and Rachel Anne Beard. James, age 13 years, appeared on the US Census of 1900 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, as a servant in the Seibert household.4 James, age 24, appeared on the US Census of 1910 living at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, James Bruce and Rachel Anne Oakes. He is listed as a laborer in a car shop.6 According to the Federal Census in 1910, James was a laborer in a car shop.6
James Bruce Oakes Jr., age 30, married Ruth Evangeline Rowe, age 22 , daughter of Warden Alvin Rowe and Margaret Sheary, on 15 February 1917 at the Waynesboro Evangelican Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
On 12 September 1918, James registered for the World War I draft, while living at Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, giving his age as 32 and his employer as the Pennsylvania Rail Road. He lists his occupation as a locomotive engineer.5
James, age 33 years, and Ruth, age 25 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 on 619 Rail Road Avenue, Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.9 According to the Federal Census in 1920, James was a fireman on the Pennsylvania Rail Road.9 James, age 43 years, and Ruth, age 35 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 on 481 Second Street, Northumberland, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.8 According to the Federal Census in 1930, James was a fireman on the railroad.8 James died on 28 July 1939 at home on 481 Second Street, Northumberland, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, at age 53 from a coronary occlusion.1,2
James's obituary of 31 July 1939, reads:
Funeral services for James B. Pennsylvania Railroad engineer who died while seated on his front porch Friday night, were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the late home, 481 Second street.
Rev. C. P. Lewis, pastor of the Presbyterian church of which the deceased was a trustee, officiated, and interment was made in the McEwensville cemetery. Mr. Oakes was a native of Watsontown. Pallbearers were J. I. Stumpff, G. Q. Bingaman, O. G. Hall, S. G. Haas, S. T. Post and Charles Sober.
