Ruth Evangeline Rowe was born on 17 December 1894 at Mifflinburg, Union County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4 She was the daughter of Warden Alvin Rowe and Margaret Sheary. Ruth, age 5, appeared on the US Census of 1900 living at West Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania,in the household of her parents, Warden Alvin and Margaret Rowe.1 Ruth, age 15, appeared on the US Census of 1910 living at Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of her parents, Warden Alvin and Margaret Rowe.5 As of 15 February 1917,her married name was Oakes.
Ruth Evangeline Rowe, age 22, married James Bruce Oakes Jr., age 30 , son of James Bruce Oakes and Rachel Anne Beard, on 15 February 1917 at the Waynesboro Evangelican Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
Ruth, age 25 years, and James, age 33 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 on 619 Rail Road Avenue, Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.8 Ruth, age 35 years, and James, age 43 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 on 481 Second Street, Northumberland, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.7 Ruth Evangeline Rowe died on 3 September 1937 at Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Mahoning Township, Montour County, Pennsylvania, at age 42 from endometriosis.2,3,4 Ruth's obituary of 4 September 1937, reads:
Mrs. Ruth E. Oakes, wife of J. B. Oakes, 481 Second street, died yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock in the Geisinger Memorial Hospital following a fourth operation.
Mrs. Oakes was admitted to the hospital fifteen weeks ago and had eight blood transfusions. Yesterday she operated upon for the fourth time.
The deceased was born in Mitflinburg, December 17, 1894, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Rowe, deceased. She was fortytwo years of age.
She was a faithful member of the First. Presbyterian Church, Northumberland, and was treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society of the church since it was organized. She was held in high regard by a host of friends.
Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Eleanor, and the following brothers and sisters: P. E. Rowe, of Lock Haven; Mrs. G. F. Bowser, of 479 Second street, and Mrs. Rex. O. Spooner of Sunbury.
Funeral services will be held on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home, with interment in McEwensville cemetery. Rev. C. P. Lewis of the First Presbyterian church will officiate.
Friends may view the body at the home Sunday afternoon and evening, and up until Monday noon.
