     Asa Carter was born on 6 May 1750 at Leominster, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Nathaniel Carter and Thankful Sawyer.1 Asamoved to Buckland, Massachusetts, circa 1774.1

Asa Carter, age 24, married Betty Wood, age 20 on 7 May 1774 at Leominster, Massachusetts.

According to Carter (1887), "The tradition is that the way was marked only by cuts upon the trees; that he carried the two oldest children on one horse, while his wife followed with the twins, about a year old, on another.1" Asamoved to Leominster, Massachusetts, circa 1783.1 According to Carter (1887), "He became blind, and many stories are told of his keen perception of persons and things, although deprived of sight. Hearing what he supposed to be a bear about the house one night, he seized an axe and threw it in the direction of the noise; the next morning a bear's foot and bloody tracks were found, and in a few weeks a bear which had lost one foot was killed in the woods near by."1 He died on 21 January 1822 at Leominster, Massachusetts, at age 71 at the home of his son Abel.1
