William Orton Gokey was born on 26 April 1875 at Worcester, Vermont.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Charles Cyrus Gokey and Ellen Eliza Johnson. William Orton Gokey went by the nick-name of Ordie. He appeared on the US Census of 1880 in the household of his parents, Charles Cyrus and Ellen Eliza Gokey.7
William Orton Gokey, age 22, married Esther Agnes Matthews, age 22 , daughter of Joseph Matthews and Jane Elisabeth Pareau, on 15 June 1897 at the Northfield, Vermont.1,5

Giving his age as 43; and his employer as E. L. Kerr.3
William Orton Gokey appeared as Head of Household with Esther Agnes Matthews, his wife, on the United States Census of 1920 on 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.9 William Orton Gokey appeared as Head of Household with Esther Agnes Matthews, his wife, on the United States Census of 1930 on 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.10 William Orton Gokey appeared as Head of Household with Esther Agnes Matthews, his wife, on the United States Census of 1940 on 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.11 In 1941 William and Esther lived at 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts, according to the Boston, Massachusetts, City Directory, 1941.12 William was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Barre, Vermont.2 He died on 19 November 1947 at Boston, Massachusetts, at age 72.2 William's obituary of 20 November 1947, reads:

and Ellen (Johnson) Gokey, He spent his early life in Northfield, where he attended public schools and was always called "Ordie." He attended Albany business college and worked in the Duke Harrington grocery store and in the E. L. Kerr meat market here.
In September, 1897, he married Esther Whelpy of Montpelier and with her observed their 50th wedding anniversary last fall. For many years he was employed by the American Express company in the North Station at Boston. Eight years ago he suffered a serious accident there and had been retired since then. He attended Tremont temple at Boston. Survivors are his wife, several step-children, two sisters, Mrs. George E. Davis of Northfield and Mrs. Lloyd Derick of Springfield, Mass; three brothers, Frank A. of Bath, Me., Dr. Harry M. Gokey of Bridgeport, Conn., and Charles N. Gokey of Montpelier.
The body is expected to be brought to Northfield on Friday and funeral services will be held at the Kingston & Morse funeral home Saturday, with burial in the family lot in Elmwood cemetery.
