John J. Sullivan Sullivan J.P., K.P.M was born on 7 August 1846 at Trinity, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.1,2 He was the son of Florence Michael Sullivan and Ann Hanlon. John moved to St. John's as a young man, was educated there, and entered the baking trade.1,2 John was the third man to join the police force, then under the command of Inspector Foley in May 1871 at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He Rose quickly through the ranks, and attained the rank of Acting Sergeant in November, 1871. Swiftly gaining the attention of his superiors through his devotion to duty he attained the rank of Sergeant, November, 1872. He achieved promotion again to the rank of Second Class Head Constable in 1875.1,2
John J. Sullivan Sullivan J.P., K.P.M, age 27, married Annie Ellen Donaghue, daughter of Thomas Donaghue and Ellen McLaughlain, on 19 April 1874.1,3 In 1892 he was appointed on of the Fire Commissioners and was mainly responsible for the formation of the St. John's Fire Constabulary.2
John J. Sullivan Sullivan J.P., K.P.M, age 49, married Mary Ellen McCourt, daughter of Phillip McCourt and Catherine (?), on 16 February 1896 at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.4,3 John was retired in September 1917 at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He was awarded the King's Police Medal.2 He died on 17 October 1918 at St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, at age 72.2 John's obituary was published on 19 October 1918.2
