James Oakes was born on 11 August 1801 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of Flower Oakes and Mary Margaret Donley.
James Oakes married Maria Durham, daughter of James Durham and Margaret McClintock. James, age 48 years, and Maria, age 33 years, appeared on the US Census of 1850 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1 According to the Federal Census in 1850, James was a farmer.1 James, age 58 years, and Maria, age 43 years, appeared on the US Census of 1860 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.3 According to the Federal Census in 1860, James was a farmer.3 He died on 6 September 1860 at Pennsylvania at age 59.2,4 He was buried at Warrior Run Church Cemetery, Delaware Run, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, in plot A-10L. James's epitaph reads:
His estate was probated on 20 September 1860 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.5
