     James Gaughan was born in October 1882 at Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Thomas Gaughan and Winifred Noble. James, age 17, appeared on the US Census of 1900 living at 5 Hickory Street, Archbald, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Thomas and Winifred Gaughan.1 According to the census in 1900, James was a teacher. He died on 20 August 1900 at Archbald, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, at age 17.2 James's obituary of 22 August 1900, reads:

ARCHBALD


James Gaughan, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Gaughan of Mt. Vernon, died at 11 o'clock Monday night after illness of five months. He was first afflicted with la grippe which the skill the doctors was unable to overcome and he continued to fail until the end came Monday night. deceased was about 17 years old he was Thea highly regarded by his associates. He was a quiet boy, whose death will be regretted by all who know him. He was a brother of School Director M. F. Gaughan and of William, Thomas, Patrick and John Gaughan, all of this place. His funeral takes place Thursday morning, when a requiem mass will be St. Thomas' church.

James was buried on 23 August 1900 at Saint Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, Archbald, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.2
