     Duncan I MacCrinan , King of the Scots was born in 1007 at Scotland.1,2,3 He was the son of Thane Crinan Mormær of Atholl and Bethoc of Scotland. He is the historical basis of the "King Duncan" in Shakespeare's play Macbeth.4

Duncan I MacCrinan , King of the Scots married Suthen, daughter of Siward, circa 1030.1,2,3,5,4 Duncan was crowned the King of the Scots in 1034.6,7,3,5 In 1035 Duncan led a large Scots army south to besiege Durham, but the expedition ended in disaster. Duncan survived.3,5,4 He died on 14 August 1040 at near Elgin, Moray, Scotland, He led an army north into Moray, Macbeth's domain, apparently on a punitive expedition against Moray. There he was killed in action, at Bothnagowan, now Pitgaveny, near Elgin, by the men of Moray led by Macbeth, probably on 14 August 1040.6,3,5 He is thought to have been buried at Elgin before later relocation to the island of Iona.4
