     Regnier I ~ Count of Hainaut and the Count of Lorraine was born circa 850.1 He was the son of Giselbert ~ Count in the Maasgau, Count of Darnau and Ermengarde of Lorraine ~ Princess of Italy.

Regnier I ~ Count of Hainaut and the Count of Lorraine married Hersent of France, daughter of Charles II the Bald ~ Holy Roman Emperor and King of France and Ermentrude of Orléans.2,1,3 Regnier was known to be living between 877 and 886.1 Regnier was appointed in 897, the Lay Abbot of Echternach in Luxembourg, which office he held until his death.2 Regnier became, in 900, he Duke of Lorraine.2,1 He died before 19 January 915.2,3
