     John James Scully was born on 2 March 1898 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of Paul Scully and Nancy Veronica Scobie. John James Scully went by the nick-name of Jack. John, age 2, appeared on the US Census of 1900 living at 1122 Rives Avenue, Esplen, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Paul and Anna Scully.1 John, age 12, appeared on the US Census of 1910 living at 1524 West Carson Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Paul and Anna Scully.6 He enlisted during World War I on 6 December 1917, he served with G Company 23rd Engineers of the U.S. Army, first at Fort Meade, Maryland, then later in France. He was in action during the Muse Argonne Campaign. After the Armistice, he took leave and visited his Aunt Fran who lived in Nice, France. He returned home in 17 June 1919.2,3,7 Jack was a steam fitter's helper in 1919.2,8 John, age 22, appeared on the US Census of 1920 living at 2407 West Carson Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Paul and Anna Scully.9 According to the Federal Census in 1920, John was a steam fitter in the construction industry.9 On 18 July 1923, John James Scully and Margaret O'Toole announced their engagement. The announcement read:

ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED.


John F. O'Toole of Wabash avenue. West End, announces the engagement of his daughter, Miss Margaret Patricia O' and John Scully, son and Mrs. Paul Scully of Esplen. Mr. Scully was graduated from Duquesne University.

John James Scully, age 25, married Margaret O'Toole, age 25 , daughter of John Francis O'Toole and Ellen Madden, in August 1923 at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

According to Rose Scully, after Peg's death:
"He brought the children home [his mother's home] and taught Eileen to call my mother [Nancy Scobie Scully] "Mom". It was nice for us to have him and the two little ones, but having had for three brief years his own home, even if it was just a few rooms, he wasn't satisfied here. He did his best to make things pleasant for everybody else. He had a quick wit, and even on the most serious occasions he could say something exquisitely funny. There was never anything phony about Jack; he was a real gentleman.3"


John, age 31, appeared on the US Census of 1930 living at 2407 West Carson Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Paul and Anna Scully.13 According to the Federal Census in 1930, John was a common laborer in a power plant and a widower.14 John, age 41, appeared on the US Census of 1940 living at 2407 West Carson Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Paul and Anna Scully.15 According to the Federal Census in 1940, John was a stockman.15 On on 16 February 1942, John registered for the World War II draft, while living at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, giving his age as 43 and his employer as August A. Race & Sons.16 John, age 50, appeared on the US Census of 1950 living at 2407 West Carson Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,in the household of his mother, Anna Scobie; She was listed as a widow.17 According to the Federal Census in 1950, John was a steam fitter for a construction contractor.17 He died on 20 September 1961 at VA Hospital - University Drive, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at age 63 from Laennec's cirrhosis of liver.2,3,5,18,19 John's obituary of 22 September 1961, reads:

SCULLY—John J. of 2407 W. Carson St.. on Wednesday, Sept. 20. 1961; father of Eileen and John Scully: brother of Paul Joseph D., Mary and Rose Scully: also five grandchildren. Friends received at A.. STAAB & SONS FUNERAL HOME. 900 Chartiers Ave., West End. Pittsburgh. Requiem high mass in St. James Church on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 10 a. m. Member of Steamfitters Local No. 449.

Jack was buried on 23 September 1961 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in plot S-385-g.5,18,19
