     Charles II the Bald ~ Holy Roman Emperor and King of France was born on 13 June 828 at Frankfurt-am-Main, Hesse, Germany.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of Louis I the Pious ~ Holy Roman Emperor and Judith of Bavaria. Charles was crowned the King of the Franks in 840.2 By the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the Carolingian Empire was divided into three kingdoms, with Charles the Bald receiving the West Frankish Kingdom, Lothar receiving the Kingdom of Lothar, and Louis the German receiving the East Frankish Kingdom.

Charles II the Bald ~ Holy Roman Emperor and King of France married Ermentrude of Orléans, daughter of Eudes ~ Count of Orléans and Engeltrude.1,2,5,4,6 Charles was crowned the King of Burgundy in 869.

Charles II the Bald ~ Holy Roman Emperor and King of France, age 42, married Richardis of Metz, daughter of Budwine or Bivin of Gorze ~ Count of Italy and Metz and Richilde of Arles, on 25 November 870.1,4 Charles was crowned the King of Italy in 875. Charles was elected Holy Roman Empero on 25 December 875.2 He died on 6 October 877 at Brides-les-Bains, France, at age 49.1,2,3,4,5
