     George Carl Bercel was born on 8 January 1912 at Castle Shannon, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 He was the son of Joseph Bercel and Mary Soyak. George Carl Bercel was christened on 4 February 1912 at St. Anne's Church, Castle Shannon, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, by the Rev Joseph P. Haugh.4 George, age 7, appeared on the US Census of 1920 living in the Pittsburg Terminal Coal Co Houses, Library Road, Castle Shannon, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Joseph and Mary Bercel.8 George, age 18, appeared on the US Census of 1930 living at Derry, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Joseph and Mary Bercel.9 According to the Federal Census in 1930, George was a coal miner.9 The following news article appears in The Latrobe Bulletin on 25 May 1932:

George Bercel, aged 21 years, of Derry R, D. No. 1, was committed to the county Jail for five days, yesterday, in default of a $10 fine and costs. He was given a bearing before Justice H. W. Kuhlman, of Arnold, on a reckless driving charge.10


George Carl Bercel, age 25, married Mary Elizabeth Myers, age 30 , daughter of Joseph Lucas Myers and Anna Isabelle Geiger, on 29 June 1937 at the Holy Family Church, Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

On on 16 October 1940, George registered for the World War II draft, while living at East Hill Drive, New Kensington, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He gave his age as 28, and his employer as the Creighton Fuel Company.5 George, age 37 years, and Elizabeth Bercel, age 43 years, appeared on the US Census of 1950 at 849 East Hill Drive, New Kensington, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.13 According to the Federal Census in 1950, George was a mine motorman in a coal mine.13 George died on 9 January 1963 at Citizens General Hospital, New Kensington, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, at age 51 from acute coronary occlusion due to myocardial infarction.1,2,3,6,7 George's obituary of 11 January 1963, reads:

Born January 8, 1912, employed as custodian in Nurses Home in hospital; member St.' Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Holy Name Society- and Moose Lodge, New Kensington.

Survived by widow, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Myers. Bercel, son, George R., Ft. Sill, Okla; daughters, Mrs. Russell 1 (Dianne) Makara, New Kensington; Miss Madelyn Louise Bercel, at home; brothers, Joseph, Derry; John, Warren, Stephen, Elks Ridge, Va; sisters, Mrs. Michael (Elizabeth) Nowalsky, New Kensington; Mrs. Andrew (Mary) Kolarovsky, Florida.

Friends at Terrence G. Dona: her Funeral Home, 1369 Fifth Ave., Arnold. Requiem high mass 10 a.m. Monday, St. Joseph Church. Interment Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
