     Rachel Anne Beard was born on 5 January 1854 at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1,2 She was the daughter of John P. Beard and Sarah Allen. Rachel Anne Beardappeared on the US Census of 1860 in the household of Agnes J. Beard at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.3 Rachel, age 15 years, and James, age 21 years, appeared on the US Census of 1870 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.4 Rachel Anne Beardappeared on the US Census of 1870 in the household of Nancy Moore at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.4

Rachel Anne Beard, age 21, married James Bruce Oakes, age 27 , son of James Oakes and Maria Durham, on 18 November 1875.1,5 Rachel, age 25 years, and James, age 31 years, appeared on the US Census of 1880 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.6 Rachel, age 45 years, and James, age 51 years, appeared on the US Census of 1900 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1 Rachel, age 55 years, and James, age 61 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.7 Rachel Anne Beardappeared on the US Census of 1920 in the household of Alvin Ray Oakes at Mill Road, Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.8 According to the Federal Census in 1920, Rachel was a widow.8 She died on 20 February 1921 at home on Watsontown, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, at age 67 due to cancer and followed an illness of a year.2,9 She was buried on 23 February 1921 at McEwensville Presbyterian Cemetery, McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.2,9,5 Rachel's obituary of 24 February 1921, reads:

MRS. RACHEL A. OAKES


Mrs. Rachel A. Oakes, widow of the late James Bruce Oakes, died Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at her residence near Watsontown. Death was due to cancer and followed an illness of a year.

Mrs. Oakes was a member of the Warrior Run Presbyterian church and was one of the most highly esteemed residents of Watsontown and vicinity. She was aged 67 years and is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. George S. Frederick, of Watsontown R. D; John W. Oakes, of Wilmington, Del; W. Wood Oakes, of Shamokin Dam; James E. Oakes, of Sunbury, and Rachel and Alvin, at home; also by one sister, Miss Agnes J. Beard, of New York City.

The funeral was held yesterday morning. Rev. P. A. DeLong had charge of the services. Interment was made in the McEwensville cemetery.2,9
