David Goodell
     David H. Goodell was born on 18 September 1816 at Rowe, Massachusetts. He was the son of Harvey Goodell and Anna Sherman. According to Jane Cherichetti, "David remained on the family farm, working for his father until he reached the age of 21. H was first employed as a peddler of Yankee Notions which he sold from a trunk on his back. He also worked as a store clerk and, at one time owned is own store...Prior to his marriage, David traveled by foot or horseback to Boston, selling produce and goods. he sometimes drove an ox team, hauling butter and cheese."1

David H. Goodell, age 26, married Sabrina Hicks, age 23 on 18 September 1842 at Rowe, Massachusetts. After his marriage, according to Jane Cherichetti, "Family letters indicated that he traveled to Pennsylvania to visit Sherman relatives who had relocated there, and he kept up with correspondence and pictures. One cousin, David T. Sherman, returned for a visit in Monroe and married David's sister, Almira. While living in Monroe, he carried on an extensive business as a dealer in cattle, horses, sheep, and wool. He was active in politics, a member of the Know-Nothing Party, and serving as selectman, justice of the peace, and a member of the school committee."1 Following the death of his first wife, David lived with his Peoria, Illinois for a few years, where two of his brothers lived.1

David H. Goodell, age 70, married Flora Weed on 25 May 1887. David H. Goodell died on 11 November 1894 at Whitingham, Vermont, at age 78. He was buried at South Hill Cemetery, Readsboro, Vermont.
