     William Travis was born in September 1821 at Sullivan County, New York.1 He was the son of Joseph Travis and Abigail Tompkins.

William Travis, age 20, married Eliza Maria Schoonmaker, age 18 , daughter of Jacob L. Schoonmaker and Sarah Snyder, on 20 January 1842 at Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, New York.1 William Travis, age 28 years, appeared as head of household on the census of 1850 at Wawarsing, Ulster County, New York.2 He, age 33 years, appeared as head of household on the census of 1855 at Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, New York.3 He, age 38 years, appeared as head of household on the census of 1860 at Mamakating, Sullivan County, New York.4 On 22 August 1862, he enlisted in the 143rd Regiment, Company E. as a private.5,6,7 William was killed in battle on 25 May 1864 at near Dallas, Georgia, at age 42 during the Atlanta Campaign in the Battle of Dallas.5,6
