Betty Wood, age 20, married Asa Carter, age 24 , son of Nathaniel Carter and Thankful Sawyer, on 7 May 1774 at Leominster, Massachusetts.

According to Carter (1887), "The tradition is that the way was marked only by cuts upon the trees; that he carried the two oldest children on one horse, while his wife followed with the twins, about a year old, on another.1" Betty Wood died on 15 January 1811 at Jaffrey, New Hampshire, at age 57.1
