Gravestone of Josiah White
     Josiah White was born on 3 January 1713/14 at Lancaster, Massachusetts.1,2,3 He was the son of Deacon Josiah White and Abigail Whitcomb.

Josiah White, age 25, married Deborah House, age 16 , daughter of Joseph House and Lydia Curtis, on 14 March 1738/39 at Lancaster, Massachusetts. By Joseph Wilder.1,2,4,5,3 He lived in the part of Lancaster, which was set off as Leominster where he built the first saw-mill and also the " Old Abbey."2 Josiah lived in 1768 at Charlestown, New Hampshire.2 Josiah White of Charlestown, N. H., bought of Jeremiah Allen of Rockingham, Vt., for £17, ninety acres of land in Rockingham, being in Lot number nine in second Range of the plan of the town.2 On 14 January 1779, Josiah purchased from Ezra Whitney ninety acres of land lying in tenth Range of Lots in Rockingham, Vermont for £50.2

Josiah White, age 65, married Elizabeth Stockwell on 16 September 1779 at Rockingham, Vermont.1,2 On 13 September 1780, Josiah bought from Asa White, sixty acres of land for £60. Then on 2 April 1781, he bought rom Peter Evans, Jr., lot number four in "Williams River Meadow," for ,£30. On 11 June 11 1782, he sold the same to Oliver Lovell for ,£20.2 Apr. 10, 1781, bought of Asahel Stebbins of Northfield for ,£16 two
house lots, one joining on East River.

Josiah White married Tabitha ______.2 Josiah, appeared on the US Census of 1790 at Rockingham, Vermont. The enumeration reads:

1 - Free White Persons - Males - 16 and over
1 - Free White Persons - Females
2 - Number of Household Members.6


Josiah and Tabitha White of Rockingham, Vt., had an interest in the estate of Mr. Taylor of Shrewsbury, Mass., in 1794.2 Josiah sold his pew seat, and the deed reads:
Rockingham in the County of Windham and the state of Vermont, for and in consideration of the sum of thirty-three dollars and thirty-three cts. curent money of the United States to me in hand paid before the delivery hereof to Levi Sabin of Rockingham, in the County and State aforesaid. The receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have given, granted, bargained & sold and by these present do give, grant, bargain, sell, release, convey and confirm unto him the said Levi Sabin, his heirs and assigns forever, the Northeast corner Pew of the body Pews so called on the East side of the broad alley of the Rockingham Meeting house.

To have and to hold said granted and bargained premises with all the appertainanceses and privileges thereto belonging to him the said Levi Sabin, his heirs and assigns to his and their proper use and benifit forever. I hereby coventing and ingaging for myself, my heirs, Executors and administrators that at and until the release and delivery hereof I am the true and lawfull owener of the premises and have good sight to bargain and sell the same in manner afforsaid and that I will warrant and defend the same from the lawful claim of all person claim ing the same whomsoever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16 day of August, Anno Domini, 1803.

He died on 1 September 1806 at Rockingham, Vermont, at age 92.1,2,3 He was buried at Rockingham Meeting House Cemetery, Rockingham, Vermont. Josiah's epitaph reads:

The descendants of Josiah White at his death. Children 15; Grandchildren 160; Great grandchildren 211; Children deceased 2; Grandchildren deceased 26 Great grandchildren deceased 35.1,2,3
