     Henry I the Courageous , Duke of Brabant was born in 1165 at Leuven, Brabant, France, now Belgium.1,2,3 He was the son of Godrey III , Duke of Brabant and of Lower Lorraine and Margaret von Limbourg. Henry I the Courageous's full titles were the Duke of Brabant, the Duke of Lower Lorraine, the Landgrave of Brabant, Margrave of Antwerp, and the Count of Louvain.4,3

Henry I the Courageous , Duke of Brabant married Matilda of Bloulogne, daughter of Matthew of Alsace ~ Comte de Boulogne and Mary of Blois ~ Princess of England and Countess of Mortain, in 1179.4,3,1,5,2 He acted as a regent while Count Godfrey III went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem from 1182 to 1184.3 Henry was created, in 1183, the first Duke of Brabant.3

Henry I the Courageous , Duke of Brabant married Marie of France , Duchess of Brabant, daughter of Philip II Augustus , King of France and Agnes of Merania, on 2 April 1213 at Soissons, Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France.1 He joined the Fifth Crusade to Egypt from 1217 to 1218.3 Henry I the Courageous , Duke of Brabant died on 5 September 1235 at Cologne, Germany.5,1,4,2,3 He was buried at St. Peter's Church, Leuven, Brabant, Germany.1
