Captain Robert Gladwin Roy

     Captain Robert Gladwin Roy was born on 5 October 1919 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.^{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8} He was the son of Leo Joseph Roy and Gladys C. Gladwin. Captain Robert Gladwin Roy went by the nick-name of Bob. Bob, age 3 months, appeared on the US Census of 1920 living at E 102nd Street, Cleveland, Ohio,in the household of his parents, Leo Joseph and Gladys C. Roy.⁹ Captain Robert Gladwin Roy was christened on 11 June 1922 in the Akron Universalist Church, Akron, Ohio.¹⁰ Bob, age 10, appeared on the US Census of 1930 living at 575 East 102nd Street, Cleveland, Ohio,in the household of his parents, Leo Joseph and Gladys C. Roy.¹¹ Bob Roy was was confirmed at the Incarnation Episcopal Church, Cleveland, Ohio.¹² Bob, age 20, appeared on the US Census of 1940 living at 15906 Park Grove, Cleveland, Ohio,in the household of his parents, Leo Joseph and Gladys C. Roy.¹³ According to the census in 1940, Robert was an orderly in a hospital.¹³ Robert registered for the draft giving his age as 21, his address as 15906 Parkgrove Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. He was employed by the Huron Road Hospital on 16 October 1940 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.⁸ He joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps on 17 February 1941.^14,15,16 It was at Fort Devens in 1941, that then Sgt. Roy kept the PX lunch counter open late so that Shirley Woodman could get lunch. From there they started dating.¹⁵

Captain Robert Gladwin Roy, age 22, married Shirley Frances Woodman, age 24 , daughter of Harry Lincoln Woodman and Ruth Esther Ward, on 3 May 1942 at the Lowell, Massachusetts.^17,18,19,20 From June 1942 to 1945 Bob and Shirley lived at New Estate Road, Littleton, Massachusetts.¹⁷ Bob was discharged from the Army on 16 December 1945.¹⁴ From 1946 to 1948 Bob and Shirley lived at 34 Deshon Manner, Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania.¹⁵ In 1949 Bob and Shirley lived at Liberty Street, West Alexander, Washington County, Pennsylvania.¹⁵ Having joined the National Guard, he was called up with the 28th Division in 1950 during of the Korean War.¹⁴ Robert Roy, 30 years, appeared as Head of Household with Shirley, his wife, on the United States Census of 1950 at 34 Deshon Manner, Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania.²¹ According to the Federal Census in 1950, Robert was a field representative for a farm supply company.²¹ Bob stationed in 1951 at Camp Atterbury, Bartholomew County, Indiana.¹⁵ From 1952 to 1953 Bob and Shirley lived at 77 Schiller Stß, Göeppingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.¹⁵ From 1953 to 1954 Bob and Shirley lived at Argonnen Stß, Bad Canstatt, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.¹⁵ Captain Robert Gladwin Roy and Shirley Frances Woodman were found on a passenger list on 21 October 1954; Lt. Robert and Shirley with their son, Robert A. bordered an aircraft of the Seaboard and Western Airlines and flew from Frankfurt to New York City.²² From 1955 to 1957 Bob and Shirley lived at Kimbro Loop, Fort Belvoir, Fairfax County, Virginia.^14,15 Captain Robert Gladwin Roy was retired on 27 May 1957 at Fort Belvoir, Fairfax County, Virginia.¹⁵ From June 1957 to May 1966 Bob lived at 33 Blanchard Circle, Athol, Massachusetts.¹⁵ Bob was employed at the Orange Credit Union in 1958 at Orange, Massachusetts.¹⁵ In 1959 he was the Director of Civil Defense for Orange, Massachusetts.¹⁵ He died on 3 May 1966 at Athol, Massachusetts, at age 46.^{2,3,5,6,7,14,15} Robert was buried on 9 May 1966 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington (city), Virginia, in section 51, grave 1392.^2,7,14,15
