     The Rev Jacob Sherwin was born on 17 October 1699 at Ipswich, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of John Sherwin and Mary Chandler.

The Rev Jacob Sherwin, age 34, married Hannah Phelps, age 32 , daughter of Captain Nathaniel Phelps and Hannah Bissell, on 20 March 1734 at Hebron, Connecticut.1,3,4,5,6 The Rev Jacob Sherwin was Jacob Sherman was chosen as the first pastor of the Second Church Congregational of Ashland, Massachusetts in 1763.7,8 It seems that the Rev Jacob Sherwin owned a female black slave and she became the mother of a light skinned child. There were suspicians as to the father, and Mr. Sherman was dismissed in 1774. He never attempted to vindicate himself.7 He died before 1792 at Ashfield, Massachusetts.1
