     Arnold I the Old ~ Comte de Flanders et Artois was born between 885 and 890 at Flanders, France (now Belgium).1,2,3 He was the son of Baldwin II the Bald ~ Comte de Flanders et Artois and Ælfthryth. Arnold's name was also spelt Arnulf.1

Arnold I the Old ~ Comte de Flanders et Artois married Adelaide de Vermandois, daughter of Herbert II ~ Comte de Vermandois et Troyes and Hildebrande of Neustria ~ Princess of the West Franks, in 934.1,2,3,4,5 He waged a war in the late 930's against William Longsword, the Duke of Normandy. Some sources state that a peace conference was held in December 942, and that Arnolph arranged for the murder of William Longsword at that time. Other sources state that "Arnolph waged war against William of Normandy, whom he defeated and slew."4 Arnold I the Old ~ Comte de Flanders et Artois died on 27 March 965 at Flanders, France (now Belgium).1,2,3
