William Travis

     William Travis was born in September 1821 at Sullivan County, New York.¹ He was the son of Joseph Travis and Abigail Tompkins.

William Travis, age 20, married Eliza Maria Schoonmaker, age 18 , daughter of Jacob L. Schoonmaker and Sarah Snyder, on 20 January 1842 at the Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, New York.¹ William, age 28 years, and Eliza Travis, age 26 years, appeared on the US Census of 1850 at Fallsburgh, Sullivan County, New York.² William Travis, 38 years, appeared as Head of Household with Eliza, his wife, on the United States Census of 1860 at Mamakating, Sullivan County, New York.³ On 22 August 1862, he enlisted in the 143^rd Regiment, Company E. as a private.^4,5,6 William was killed in battle on 25 May 1864 near Dallas, Georgia, at age 42, in the Battle of Dallas during the Atlanta Campaign.^4,5 William, age 48 years, and Eliza Travis, age 46 years, appeared on the US Census of 1870 at Mamakating, Sullivan County, New York.⁷
