     John William Oakes Jr. was born on 31 December 1917 at New Florence, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 He was the son of John Walker Oakes and Mary Gertrude Lotz. John William Oakes Jr.appeared on the US Census of 1920 in the household of John Walker Oakes and Mary Gertrude Lotz at Hickory Street, Hollidaysburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania.9 John William Oakes Jr.appeared on the US Census of 1930 in the household of John Walker Oakes and Mary Gertrude Lotz at 806 Allegheny Street, Hollidaysburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania.10 According to the Federal Census in 1940, John was a senior in high school and a new worker.9 John registered for the draft giving his age as 22; his address as 501 Summit Avenue, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania; and his employer as the Pennsylvania Machine Company on 16 October 1940 at Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.6 John and Althea's engagement announcement of 29 October 1940, reads:

Mrs. Phebe L. Brindle, of Laveen street wishes to announce the engagement of her daughter, Althea Elizabeth, to John William Oakes, Jr., son of Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Oakes. of Johnstown, formerly of Latrobe. The wedding will be held at the Park Avenue United Brethren Church. Johnstown, November 8th, with tbe groom's father, Rev. Oakes, officiating.

Miss Brindle Is with the Pearce Manufacturing Company and Mr. Oakes U with the Penn Machine Company, Johnstown.11


John William Oakes Jr., age 22, married Althea Elizabeth Brindle, age 22 , daughter of Charles Henry Brindle and Phoebe Lavina Green, on 8 November 1940 at United Brethren Church, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.11 John and Althea were listed in the 1941 Johnstown, Pennsylvania, City Directory as living on 501 Summit Avenue.12 He served in the US Navy with the seabees during World War II as an EM2 from 2 September 1943 to 25 November 1945.2,4,8 On 29 April 1950, he applied for compensation for his World War II service.7

John William Oakes Jr., age 40, married Leila Lorraine Jones, age 30 , daughter of Albert J. Jones and Jessie M. Gillett, on 22 December 1958.13 John William Oakes Jr. was retired in 1982; as an electrician at Hayes-Albion Corp.8 John and Leilamoved to Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan, in 1984.8 In 1995, the year John died, he lived at Tekonsha, Calhoun County, Michigan.5 He died on 11 September 1995 at the Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan, at age 77.1,2,3,4,5,8 He was buried on 13 September 1995 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, in section D, site 402.2,4,8 John's obituary of 13 September 1995, reads:

John W. Oakes Sr., 77, of Albion, died Monday, Sept. 11, 1995, in Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall, after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 31, 1917, in New Florence, Pa., to John W. and Florence M. (Kepner) Oakes and moved to Albion in 1984 from Eckford.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the Seabees in the South Pacific.

Mr. Oakes was employed for 19 years as an electrician at Hayes-Albion Corp. before retiring in 1982.

He married Leila L. Jones on Dec. 22, 1958, in Coldwater. She died May 4, 1988.

Also preceding him in death were three sisters.

Surviving are sons, John W. Oakes Jr. of Homer and Marvin J. Oakes of Coldwater; daughters, Leila L. Rizzo of Marshall and Betty, Joan and Janet of Pennsylvania; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Community involvement, hobbies: Former member and governor of Albion Moose Lodge.

Services: 1 p.m. today in Fort Custer National Cemetery with a Veterans Affairs chaplain officiating. Arrangements: Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.8
