Althea Brindle
     Althea Elizabeth Brindle was born on 10 June 1918 at Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Charles Henry Brindle and Phoebe Lavina Green.1,2 Althea Elizabeth Brindleappeared on the US Census of 1920 in the household of Charles Henry Brindle and Phoebe Lavina Brindle at 2621 Avenue A, Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.4 Althea Elizabeth Brindleappeared on the US Census of 1930 in the household of Charles Henry Brindle and Phoebe Lavina Brindle at 2621 Laveen Street, Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.5 Althea Elizabeth Brindleappeared on the US Census of 1940 in the household of Phoebe Lavina Brindle at 160 Bloch Avenue, C-D, Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.6 According to the Federal Census in 1940, Althea was a spooler at textile plant.6 John and Althea's wedding announcement of 29 October 1940, reads:

Mrs. Phebe L. Brindle, of Laveen street wishes to announce the engagement of her daughter, Althea Elizabeth, to John William Oakes, Jr., son of Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Oakes. of Johnstown, formerly of Latrobe. The wedding will be held at the Park Avenue United Brethren Church. Johnstown, November 8th, with tbe groom's father, Rev. Oakes, officiating.

Miss Brindle Is with the Pearce Manufacturing Company and Mr. Oakes U with the Penn Machine Company, Johnstown.7


Althea Elizabeth Brindle, age 22, married John William Oakes Jr., age 22 , son of John Walker Oakes and Mary Gertrude Lotz, on 8 November 1940 at United Brethren Church, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.7 John and Althea were listed in the 1941 Johnstown, Pennsylvania, City Directory as living on 501 Summit Avenue.8

Althea Elizabeth Oakes married Conrad LeRoy Gordon, son of James Glenn Gordon and Dora Wolff, in 1960.1 When her mother died, in December 1978, Althea lived at Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.9

Althea Elizabeth Gordon married Ralph Winfield Sanders, son of Ross W. Sanders and Mildred A. Baker, in 1980.1 Althea Elizabeth Sanders died on 22 February 2006 at Excela Health, Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, at age 87.1,2,3 Althea's obituary of 23 February 2006, reads:

Althea E. Sanders, 87, of Latrobe, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. She was born June 10, 1918, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late Charles H. and Phoebe (Green) Brindel. Prior to her retirement, Althea was a sales associate for the former Troutman's Department Store in Latrobe. She was an active member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, Latrobe, where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Latrobe Community Chorus and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 221. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Conrad L. Gordon and Ralph W. Sanders; three brothers, Paul, Charles and George Brindel; a sister, Ethel Mae Keller; and a stepson, Lee Roy Gordon. She is survived by three daughters, Betty Myers and husband, Kenneth, of Derry, Joanne Schandel and husband, Richard, of Derry, and Janet Moore and husband, Barry, of Tempe, Ariz; a stepdaughter, Jean Hartzell of Port Arthur, Texas; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the HARTMAN-GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Bethany United Methodist Church with her pastor, the Rev. August B. Twigg, officiating. Everyone please go directly to the church. Private interment will be in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. Members of the Latrobe Community Chorus will sing at 3:15 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Members of OES Chapter 221 will hold services at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.1


She was buried on 25 February 2006.1
