     William Edwin Smead was born on 23 December 1873 at Washington Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.2,3,4,1 He was the son of Thomas Edwin Smead and Martha Jane Weaver.1 William, age 6, appeared on the US Census of 1880 living at Washington Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania,in the household of his parents, Thomas Edwin and Martha Jane Smead.5 William enlisted in the US Army 6 May 1899. He served as a private in Company F, 5th Infantry, Pennsylvania National Guard. Ge was duscgarged on 6 May 1905.6 William, age 36 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 at 223 Lowell Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, living as a boarder with the Cadwell family. He as a painter.7 William was mentioned in the will of his father, Thomas Edwin Smead on 7 March 1913 at Washington Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.8

William Edwin Smead, age 39, married Margaret M. Brindle, age 35 , daughter of Phillip Kuhns Brindle and Sophia Blank, on 2 June 1913 at Detroit, Michigan.

On 12 September 1918, William registered for the World War I draft, while living at 6712 Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, giving his age as 44 and he was self employed as a printer.4 William, age 46 years, and Margaret, age 42 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 on Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.9 According to the Federal Census in 1920, William was a painter contractor.9 William died on 27 February 1920 at home on 6712 Frankstown Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at age 46 from pancratic cancer.2,3,11 William's obituary of 28 February 1920, reads:

SMEAD—On Friday evening, Feb. 27. 1920. William E. Smead, beloved husband of Margaret Smead (nee Brindell), aged 46 years. Services at his late residence, 6712 Frankstown ave., on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 29, at 2:30 o'clock. Interment at Greensburg. Pa., on Monday, train leaving East Liberty' at 9:52 a. m.

William was buried on 1 March 1920 at Union Cemetery, Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.2,3

1920 Census: He is clearly included on the 1920 census return, however the census is normally conducted between May and August by which time he had already passed away.
