     Elizabeth Carter was born on 26 July 1763 at Leominster, Massachusetts.1,2,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Elias Carter and Deborah White.1 Elizabeth Carter went by the nick-name of Betty and Betsey.6

Elizabeth Carter, age 18, married Lt. Tertius Taylor, age 27 , son of Captain Orthniel Taylor and Martha Arms, on 2 August 1781 at Buckland, Massachusetts.

Children:
When married, Tertius was serving with Washington's Army. His brother writing home from the army sends message to Betty not to think of having such a fine young officer leave the army, but to put on a heroine spirit, and fit him out with some new shirts.1,7,8,5


After her husband died, in 1823, she received a pension of $300 annually based on his military service. In 2021, adjusted for inflation, that is about $9,500 per year.3,9 Elizabeth wrote her will on 5 January 1843.10 She died on 16 January 1843 at Charlemont, Massachusetts, at age 79.1,2,11,8,6 She was buried at Old Cemetery #01, Buckland, Massachusetts, in Row 8, Stone 4. Elizabeth's epitaph reads:
