     Lt. Tertius Taylor was born on 25 July 1754 at Charlemont, Massachusetts.1,3,2 He was the son of Captain Orthniel Taylor and Martha Arms.2 He was an officer in Gen.Washington's Army, and was at White Plains, Saratoga, Stillwater and at the storming of Stony Point. Served in the Continental line - sergeant, ensign, lieutenant.1,3,4,5

Lt. Tertius Taylor, age 27, married Elizabeth Carter, age 18 , daughter of Elias Carter and Deborah White, on 2 August 1781 at Buckland, Massachusetts, When married, Tertius was serving with Washington's Army. His brother writing home from the army sends message to Betty not to think of having such a fine young officer leave the army, but to put on a heroine spirit, and fit him out with some new shirts..

After his return from the War in 1781, his father gave him a tract of 185 acres of land in Buckland. Here he lived, on what has since been known as the "Alfred Woodward place", until his brother Gen. Othniel Taylor, who had the "Fort Farm" or homestead in Charlemont, removed to Canandaigua,NY. Tertius then moved over the river, buying out Othniel and the other heirs in 1792, and spent the rest of his life there.3 Lt. Tertius Taylor was Tertius was one of the founders of the Church in Buckland, Massachusetts in 1785.4 Tertius, appeared on the US Census of 1800 at Charlemont, Massachusetts. The enumeration reads:

He died on 21 December 1822 at Charlemont, Massachusetts, at age 68.1,3,2,4,10 He was buried at Old Cemetery #01, Buckland, Massachusetts, at Row 8, Stone 5. Tertius's epitaph reads:

Lieut.
TERTIUS TAYLOR
died Dec. 21, 1822
aged 68 years.
he entered the service of the revo
lution in the year 1775, and after
the perils and privations of an eight
years war, returned to his home with
the thanks of a free and happy
Country.
