Hélène Richard was born circa 1755 at Île Saint-Jean (now Prince Edward's Island), New France.1 She was the daughter of Paul Richard dit Plate and Marie-Renée Boudrot. Her father died when she was very young and her mother married Alexander Arsenault. Hélène is often refereed to as Hélène Arsenault in the records. It was also sometimes a custom to name the first born daughter with her mother's surname.2
