     John P. Beard was born on 12 April 1823 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4 He was the son of James Beard and Nancy Moore.

Beardappeared on the US Census of 1860 in the household of Agnes J. Beard at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.6 He served in the 16th Pennsylvania Calvalry as a Lieutenant between 9 November 1862 and 9 November 1863.2 John registered for the draft in 1863 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.7 Heappeared on the US Census of 1870 in the household of Nancy Moore at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.8 According to the Federal Census in 1870, John was a farmer.8 He, age 56 years, appeared as head of household on the census of 1880 at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.9 According to the Federal Census in 1880, John was a lease agent and a widower.9 He, age 76 years, appeared as head of household on the census of 1900 at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.3 According to the Federal Census in 1900, John was a widower.3 He, age 86 years, appeared as head of household on the census of 1910 at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.10 According to the Federal Census in 1910, John was a widower.10 He died on 22 May 1910 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, at age 87 from general debility.1,2,4,11 He was buried on 25 May 1910 at McEwensville Presbyterian Cemetery, McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, in range 58, grave 8.1,2,4,11 John's obituary of 27 May 1910, reads:

Old Resident and Civil Veteran Passes Away


John P. Beard one of the oldest and best known citizens of Upper Northumberland County, died at his home in McEwensville on Sunday afternoon last in the eighty-ninth year of his age. Death was due to the infirmities of age, he being an invalid incident to advanced age for some time passed. Deceased was born at McEwensville in 1822 and resided there practically all his life. He was the last surviving member of the old Northumberland troop, a his tory of which is now appearing in The Milton i an in the "Seventy-five Years Ago" letters, taken from the old files of this paper. He served his country in the Civil War as First Lieutenant of Company L, Sixteenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry. Prior to the breaking out of the war he was engaged in the mercantile business at McEwensville and had during the active years of his life served his town faithfully and well many times by his influence and counsel. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. J. Bruce Oakes, ofPe)awrare townspip, and Miss Agnes, residing at home. Funeral services were held at his late home on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment was made in the McEwensville cemetery
