     James M. Mayhew was born on 13 October 1831 at Hermon, Maine.1,2 He was the son of William Thomas Mayhew and Faith Smith Flagg. James M. Mayhewappeared on the US Census of 1850 in the household of William Thomas Mayhew and Faith Smith Flagg at Hermon, Maine.3

James M. Mayhew, age 20, married Hannah E. Chase, age 24 , daughter of James Pratt Chase and Mary Elizabeth Badger, on 1 March 1852 at Penobscot County, Maine.4

James M. Mayhew married Amanda Jane Clark, daughter of Richard Lancaster Clark and Lucinda Thompson, in 1856 at Hermon, Maine. James, age 28 years, and Amanda, age 28 years, appeared on the US Census of 1860 at Hermon, Maine.5 According to the Federal Census in 1860, James was a laborer.5 He joined the 3rd Battery, 1st Regiment Mounted Artillery Maine Voluneers on 28 December 1861 as a private. He was discharged 20 August 1862.6 James registered for the draft in 1863 at Hermon, Maine.7 He, age 38 years, appeared as head of household on the census of 1870 at Hermon, Maine.8 According to the Federal Census in 1870, James was a day laborer.8 James, age 48 years, and Amanda, age 48 years, appeared on the US Census of 1880 at Levant, Maine.9 According to the Federal Census in 1880, James was a laborer.9

James M. Mayhew, age 54, married Katherine M. Hurd on 18 April 1886 at Hudson, Maine. James M. Mayhew died on 10 May 1912 at Bangor, Maine, at age 80 from bronchial pneumonia and arterial sclerosis.10,2,6 He was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, Maine.2,6

Compeller's Notes:
Birth: There seems to be much confusion about James' birth date which stems from his death record. In that document, his age is given as 81, and there is a dash for the months and days. Whomever reported his death, may not have known his exact birthdate. susbisguent researchers have assume that he died on his birthday which is incorrect.
