Jean I d'Avêsnes , Seigneur d'Avesnes was born on 1 May 1218 at Etraeungt (now Étrœungt), Nord, France.1 He was the son of Sir Bouchard d'Avêsnes and Margaret , Countess of Hainault and Flanders. Jean I's full titles were the Count of Hainault, Holland and Flanders; the Seigneur d'Avesnes; and the Seigneur d'Etroen.1 The Pope declared him a bastard in 1236, as he was the son of a cleric. In 1244, he was legitimatized by the Emperor Frederick II.1
Jean I d'Avêsnes , Seigneur d'Avesnes, age 28, married Adelaide of Holland, daughter of Florenz IV , Count of Holland and Matilda of Brabant , Countess of Holland, on 9 October 1246.1,2,3 He was the Seneschal of Frederick II.1 Jean I d'Avêsnes , Seigneur d'Avesnes died on 24 December 1257 at age 39.1,2
