     Sir Bouchard d'Avêsnes was born circa 1180.1 He was the son of Jacques d'Avêsnes , Seigneur d'Avêsnes, Leuze, Conde and Guise and Adele de Guise. Bouchard's full titles were Seigneur d'Avêsnes and d'Etroen; the Archdeacon of Laon; and the Canon of St. Pierre de Lille.1 Bouchard held a Dorcor Juris degree. At first he was a clerk (priest), but in 1205 he returned to the lay world.1

Sir Bouchard d'Avêsnes married Margaret , Countess of Hainault and Flanders, daughter of Baldwin VI , Count of Hainaut and Latin Emperor of Constantinople and Marie of Champagne , Empress of Constantinople, before July 1212.1,2,3 Bouchard and Margaret were divorced in 1221.1 Bouchard was knighted in 1239.1 He died in 1244 at Etraeungt (now Étrœungt), Nord, France.1,2 He was buried at Clairefontaine Abbey, Wallonia, France, now Belgium.1
